Good words about 'dead'

The general talk about a person who is dead and gone is always good. We say 'oh, he was a good man' That means most of his misdeeds are forgiven (forgotten?).
But will we do the same thing about a person who was working with you and now gone out of your department? or he has gone out of your company?
When I say he, it is she too.
May not say good words. it is not that they mean bad about the gone person. It is the power of saying. ahha, someone has come to ask my opinion. So,why should I not give a 'candid' opinion?
It does not cross their mind that a good word from them could save a lot of trouble for the transferred guy. But then, it won't show the 'world' the spokesperson's 'power of words'
So, they make it a point to 'bad mouth' the 'gone' person.
If the new boss wants to 'share' the same opinion with the new 'entrant' and gives his opinion in his face, the new comer shrinks into his shoes. He jumps with suspicion every time someone looks at him. The happiness of the transfer is gone forever. My question is 'what did the spokesperson achieve?'
As far as I am concerned, if you don't do good to others, don't. But pl. don't harm others.
